Can Net-Zero Emission Be Achieved by 2050?

July 5, 2023

To combat climate change, net-zero emission is a target that many countries, including Singapore, have set. Net-zero emission refers to the balance between the amount of greenhouse gases produced and the amount removed from the atmosphere. By reducing these harmful gas emissions, we can significantly slow down the rate of global warming, which greatly impacts the environment and human health.

With an aim to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 in Singapore, here are some things we can do collectively.

1. Generate Electricity Without Emissions

With electricity being one of the biggest contributors to harmful greenhouse gas emissions, Singapore is actively working towards reducing its reliance on fossil fuels and transitioning to renewable energy sources to combat this issue. In order to reach the target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, the government is focusing on expanding the utilisation of renewable sources, mainly solar energy, to power its electricity production, aiming for a sustainable and environmentally friendly energy landscape.

Solar energy is a clean and infinite source of power that can help in mitigating climate change by reducing the emission of greenhouse gas. As an electric power provider, Union Solar helps businesses and households in Singapore optimise their sustainability goals by generating their own electricity through the installation of solar panels. In an effort to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy, the Singapore government is also offering incentives and rebates to reach their target. These incentives include subsidies for solar panel installation from different electricity retailers and net metering, which allows excess energy generated from solar panels to be sold back to the grid.

2. Increase The Usage Of Electric Vehicles

Although Singapore greatly encourages the use of public transportation, traditional vehicles are still a significant contributor to the release of harmful emissions. Therefore, the government has been promoting the use of electric vehicles (EVs) with discounts and rebates, as well as expanding the charging infrastructure for EVs to make it convenient for everyone! Singapore is also exploring the possibility of using hydrogen-powered vehicles, which emit only water vapour. These vehicles have the potential to be a game-changer in sustainable transportation.

With growing awareness of climate change and its impacts, more people are taking steps to reduce their carbon footprint and embrace sustainable lifestyles. Singaporeans are no exception. Adopting sustainable transportation options such as public transportation, car-pooling, and ride-sharing are some ways individuals are stepping up and making a positive difference to the environment. These alternatives to driving alone can considerably reduce carbon emissions and traffic congestion.

3. Use Energy More Efficiently

Efficient use of energy reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and the government is promoting measures to encourage energy efficiency. Many businesses are also taking steps to minimise negative impacts on the environment and align with the government’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions.

One such example is DBS Bank, which has committed to using renewable energy sources to power its operations. The business intends to become carbon-neutral by 2022. Similarly, Marina Bay Sands integrated resort has pledged to reduce its carbon footprint and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. These laudable efforts by businesses set an example for others to follow and contribute to the larger goal of Singapore becoming a more sustainable nation.

Although achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 can seem like an ambitious goal, it is definitely achievable. With the government’s numerous initiatives and our collective endeavours, we can work towards a more sustainable future for ourselves and generations to come.
