Fossil Fuels Vs Renewable Energy: Is One Better Than The Other?

May 8, 2023

In the face of the current climate crisis, fossil fuels and renewable energy are two contrasting sources of energy that have been a topic of debate for decades with concerns ranging from the depletion of natural resources to environmental pollution. Fossil fuels, which include coal, oil and natural gas, have been the backbone of energy production for centuries while renewable energy, such as wind, hydropower and solar energy has gained popularity in recent years as they are seen as a clean, sustainable alternative.

With both sides claiming superiority, let’s explore and examine which source is better for the environment, economy and future generations.

Fossil Fuels

Fossil fuels have played a significant role in powering the world for over a century, providing reliable and cost-effective energy for everything from transportation to electricity generation. Although they are often considered to be cheaper than renewable energy sources in terms of upfront costs, the use of fossil fuels also comes with significant drawbacks.

  • Environmental Impact – Burning fossil fuels releases greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, contributing to climate change and exacerbating global warming. The extraction and processing of fossil fuels can also have severe environmental impacts, including habitat destruction, oil spills, and water pollution, affecting local ecosystems and human health.

  • Depletion of Resources – Fossil fuels are finite resources, and their extraction can lead to geopolitical tensions and conflicts over access to these resources. The depletion can also lead to higher costs and supply chain disruptions.

  • Negative Health Impacts –  Burning fossil fuels can release pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxide, which contribute to respiratory problems and other health issues. This can have particularly significant effects on communities located near fossil fuel extraction and processing facilities.

Renewable Energy

In order to address the challenges of climate change and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, renewable energy sources are seen as a key part of the transition that leads to a more sustainable energy system. Unlike fossil fuels, these energy sources produce little to no greenhouse gas emissions, making them a cleaner source of energy. And since they are generally considered to be infinite, we will never run out of renewable energy sources! As technology continues to improve, the cost-effectiveness and reliability of these clean energy are likely to increase, making them an even more attractive alternative to fossil fuels.

Although the world is at a crossroads when it comes to energy production, Singapore has made significant progress in promoting renewable energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Recognising the urgent need for a shift towards renewable energies, here are some things that can be done to accelerate the transition towards a greener future in Singapore.

  • Increase Investment in Renewable Energy – Singapore has set a target of generating 2 gigawatt-peak (GWp) of solar energy by 2030, which is equivalent to powering around 350,000 households. To achieve this target, the government has implemented various schemes to incentivise solar adoption, including the SolarNova programme (aims to install solar photovoltaic systems on public sector buildings, such as schools and government offices) and the Enhanced Solar Capability Scheme (provides co-funding support for businesses to install solar photovoltaic systems on their premises).

  • Promote Energy Efficiency – In addition to promoting renewable energy, Singapore can also focus on improving energy efficiency in buildings, transportation, and industry. This can be achieved through the implementation of energy-efficient building codes, the promotion of public transport and the adoption of energy-efficient technologies in the industry.

  • Encourage Public Engagement – Engaging the public in the transition to a green future is crucial for its success. The government can encourage public engagement through education and awareness-raising campaigns, as well as providing incentives for households and businesses to adopt renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies. Public engagement can help to build support for the transition to a green future and foster a sense of ownership and responsibility for sustainable energy practices.

  • Support Research and Development – Singapore has a strong research and development ecosystem that can be leveraged to support the development of new and innovative renewable energy technologies. These can include research into new solar cell technologies, energy storage solutions, and grid management systems. With this, Singapore can position itself as a leader in the renewable energy sector and drive the transition to a green future.

With the pressing need to shift towards renewable energy, it is crucial that both the government and individuals work together to accelerate the transition towards a greener future. By implementing these strategies and steps, we can definitely create a more sustainable and equitable energy system that benefits the environment, the economy and future generations.
